Ms. Styannes joined the ICO as an Investigation Officer in 2016 and currently serves as the Acting Deputy Information Commissioner. She is also the ICO’s Information Officer.
Prior to moving to Bermuda with her Bermudian husband, Ms. Styannes worked at Daly & Associates, a Hong Kong-based human rights law firm, mainly focusing on assisting refugees and asylum seekers. Ms. Styannes also worked for the Asian Human Rights Commission during her time in Hong Kong, where she headed their Indonesia Desk. She holds her Practitioner Certificate in Freedom of Information (PC.foi).
Ms. Styannes started her human rights career with the Community Legal Aid Institute (LBH Masyarakat) in Jakarta, Indonesia, while a law student at the University of Indonesia. Shortly after her graduation, she was awarded a scholarship to pursue her LL.M degree in international human rights law at the University of Essex (England, UK). Ms. Styannes was part of the university’s Human Rights Clinic as well as a research intern at Minority Rights Group International and Global Witness.
Throughout her career as a human rights researcher and advocate, Ms. Styannes has developed strong interests in the issues of access to information, freedom of expression, the rights of minorities, protection against torture and anti-discrimination. With her experience and skillset, Ms. Styannes hopes to continue contributing to the advancement of democracy and open government in Bermuda.
